What is Gum Grafting?
Gum grafting is used to repair receding gums. Loss of gum tissue means that the roots of your teeth are becoming exposed, which can lead to sensitivity to hot and cold foods, increase risks of bone tissue loss, and other issues. Gum recession can be caused by periodontal (gum) disease, bad oral hygiene practices, grinding or clenching of the teeth, and lip and tongue piercings. The risk of gum disease increases if you smoke, have poor oral hygiene habits, or have an illnesses such as diabetes.
Gum grafting involves taking tissue from your palate or a donor source and using that tissue to cover the exposed root. This will provide protection to the roots of your teeth.
